Self Defense Tactics – How to Read and Disarm a Knife Attack
A street hoodlum armed with a switchblade comes right at you. He stabs you but missed as you managed to sidestep to the side and grab his wrist in attempt to wrest the blade from his hand.
Uh-oh wrong move!
Grabbing the wrist of a blade wielding attacker is one of the worst self defense tactics on earth. It’s definitely a BIG no-no because the offender can easily counter your action by twisting his wrist to loosen your grip, and leaving you with cuts on your hand, wrist and possibly forearm (depending on the length of the knife).
And that’s not all! Just as you’re grimacing in pain, the hoodlum lunges and stabs you in the chest. The outcome?
You lose…FATALITY.
Those who have played the popular video game series “Mortal Kombat”, knows what I’m talking about. Now, if you wish to avoid the above scenario, then refer the following self defense tactics for reading and disarming a knife attack.
Note: These are general guidelines. You never know what those street lunatics might pull off.
(1) Very dangerous knife holding stance
When the thug in front of you is holding the knife in a stabbing position, please beware! This sort of position indicates that the guy means serious business. He’s ready to stab you away using overhand motions that are likely to connect into critical areas of your body such as the upper chest, neck and even your head.
(2) Another very dangerous knife holding stance
Holding the knife tightly or attempting to conceal the knife behind his back. This stance typically indicates that the attacker is sort of reviewing you. He’s probably thinking, “should I slice this bloke or not? Let me see now…”
(3) Intimidating knife holding stance
Now, if the thug is holding the blade loosely or even shifting it around his hands like in the movies, this means that he’s trying to intimidate you. He’s not planning on stabbing and slicing you just yet. I mean, if he really wants to hurt you, he would have given a go already instead of showing his blade holding/moving skills ala West Side Story. It is likely that the thug is inexperienced.
Self Defense Tactics for Disarming a Knife Wielding Thug
First and foremost, you should practice this drill with a buddy. Get your friend to use a rolled up magazine as a make-believe knife. Practice the following move as often as possible and don’t forget to make it realistic e.g. ask your training partner to lunge and stab quickly and believably.
Timing is important to avoid a knife attack. If you happen to face a thug who is eager to put a hole in your gut (zero chance of him backing down), then quickly side step to his knife holding side and immediately attack the back of his knee with your foot.
Kick it as hard as possible – like you’re practically stomping on it. If this move is executed properly, it’s very likely that he’ll fall to the ground in sheer pain. After that you can do whatever you wish. Keep kicking him, kick away the weapon or just run off.
Okay look, if you need a step-by-step guide with over 100 pictures on how to execute numerous street self defense tactics and moves that can be used in real life encounters, click on this blue underlined link.

Captive: 2,147 Days of Terror in the Colombian Jungle $11.99 On a fateful day in February 2002, campaign manager Clara Rojas accompanied longtime friend and presidential hopeful Ingrid Betancourt into an area controlled by the powerful leftist guerrilla group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). Armed with machine guns and grenades, the FARC took them hostage and kept them in the jungle for the next six years. After more than two years of captivity deep in the Colombian jungle, surrounded by jaguars, snakes, and tarantulas, miles from any town or hospital, Clara Rojas prepared to give birth in a muddy tent surrounded by heavily armed guerrillas. Her captors promised that a doctor would be brought to the camp to help her. But when Rojas went into labor and began to suffer complications, the only person on hand was a guerrilla wielding a kitchen knife. The guerrillas drugged Rojas with anesthetic while one of them slit open her abdomen. Her son, Emmanuel, was born by amateur cesarean section in April 2004. His survival was miraculous, but her joy was soon cut short when the FARC took him from her when he was only eight months old. For the next three years, Clara was given no information about him, but her desire to one day see him again kept her alive. In early 2008, Clara was finally liberated and reunited with her son—to whom this book is dedicated. |

Die upon a Kiss (Benjamin January Series #5) $7.99 In A Free Man of Color and Sold Down the River, Benjamin January guided readers through the seductive maze of New Orleans’ darkest quarters. Now January joins the orchestra of the city’s top opera house — only to become enmeshed in a web of hate and greed more murderous than any drama onstage. In 1835, the cold February streets glitter with masked revelers in Carnival costumes. An even more brilliant display is promised at the American Theater, where impresario Lorenzo Belaggio has brought the first Italian opera to town. But it’s pitch-black in the muddy alley outside the stage door when Benjamin January, coming from rehearsal with the orchestra, hears a slurred whisper, sees the flash of a knife, and is himself wounded as he rescues Belaggio from a vicious attack. The bombastic impresario first accuses two of his tenors, then suspects his rival, the manager of New Orleans’ other opera company. Could competition for audiences really provoke such violent skulduggery? Or has Belaggio taken too many chances in the catfight between two sopranos, one superseded by the other as his mistress and his prima donna? But burning in January’s mind and heart is a darker possibility. The opera Belaggio plans to present — a magnificent version of Othello — strikes a shocking chord in this culture. Is the murderous tragedy of the noble Moor and his lady, the spectacle of a black man’s passion for a white beauty, one that some Creole citizen — or American parvenu — would do anything to keep off the stage? Bloody threats and voodoo signs, poison and brutal murder seem to implicate many strange bedfellows. And Benjamin must discoverwho — in rage, retribution, or an insidious new commerce in this beautiful cutthroat city — will kill and kill … and who will Die Upon a Kiss. Eating the IT Elephant: Moving from Greenfield Development to Brownfield $31.99 A Practical, Start-to-Finish Approach to Managing, Evolving, and Transforming Legacy IT SystemsFor every IT executive, manager, architect, program leader, project leader, and lead analyst“Richard and Kevin introduce us to a reality that’s often neglected in our industry: the problem of evolving legacy systems, a domain they call ‘Brownfield development.’ The authors identify the root of the problem as that of complexity, and offer an approach that focuses on the fundamentals of abstraction and efficient communication to nibble at this problem of transformation bit by bit. As the old saying goes, the way you eat the elephant is one bite at a time. Richard and Kevin bring us to the table with knife and fork and other tools, and show us a way to devour this elephant in the room.”Grady Booch, IBM Fellow, co-creator of UML“Most organizations in the 21st century have an existing, complex systems landscape. It is time that the IT industry face up to the reality of the situation and the need for new development methods and tools that address it. This book describes a new approach to the development of future systems: a structured approach that recognizes the challenges of ‘Brownfield’ development, is based on engineering principles, and is supported by appropriate tooling.”Chris Winter, CEng CITP FBCS FIET, IBM Fellow, Member of the IBM Academy of TechnologyMost conventional approaches to IT development assume that you’re building entirely new systems. Today, “Greenfield” development is a rarity. Nearly every project exists in the context of existing, complex system landscapes—often poorly documented and poorly understood. Now, two of IBM’s most experienced senior architects offer a new approach that is fully optimized for the unique realities of “Brownfield” development.Richard Hopkins and Kevin Jenkins explain why |
