Where do I start in Chanbara?(The martial arts of the japanese sword)?
I am currently doing Muay Thai right now. I was wondering though on how I can find a school that teaches the art of the Japanese sword. I understand there are various forms of Japanese swordsmanship like Goshindo and Kenjitsu. However, I want to get ya’lls input on how I could get myself into class. I live in Marietta, Georgia and I am willing to go even 100 miles to see what its all about! Can you help me?
You really just gotta see whats in your area. A lot of places don’t have a Chanbara club/dojo. You just have to see what options you have before you decide on a specific style.
Searching online for schools in your area is a good start but a lot of schools still don’t have websites. Put a question in your local Craig’s List asking about the martial arts schools in your area. Ask the local martial arts supply stores what schools are around. Check your yellow pages. Check the classifieds in your local papers. See if there is a Yahoo Groups for martial artist in your area.
Once you feel comfortable that you are aware of the schools in your area decide what styles interest you, call the teachers and ask about their schools. Most if not all will invite you to come by and take a look. Accept as many of their offers as you can.
Once you know what is in your area you can decide who you want to learn from. It may turn out that there are no schools in your area that train with the sword. I live in Houston, Tx which has an area of 600 square miles not including the surrounding suburbs/towns and we only have two schools that teach eastern sword arts though there are reputed to be several clubs.

Excerpt: The Muyejebo is a Korean martial art manual written during the reign of King Seonjo in 1598. As the Imjin war dragged on for years, Korea needed a way to effectively train a large number of troops, and the Korean military adopted a training methodology based on a Chinese military manual called Ji Xiao Xin Shu (Hangul: ?효??, Hanja: ????) written by a famous Chinese strategist Qi Jiguang (??光). The book was of particular interest to Koreans as it was written by a Chinese strategist and a commander who has successfully defeated a major Japanese pirate force that landed in Southeast coast of China mere decades before the Imjin war. Koreans created their own version of the military training manual based on the Chinese version and called it Muyejebo. The Muyejebo contains chapters about the use of the following weapons: The information about the use of the Wisteria shield with the throwing spear and the waist sword was in one chapter. The king ordered his officials to add supplemental information to the Muyejebo, he died however before this work got published.
