Rockland County, NY ML drivers look to the SL65 AMG Black Series for another great ride by Melvin Klingensmith
When the letters AMG show up together, you know there’s going to be some speed in the mix. Speed and power together, though, are what signifies the SL65 AMG Black Series. Rockland County, NY ML owners will be impressed with the performance of the Black Series on a French race track and even more impressed once they see it in person.
Perhaps there is a bit of black magic in the new series, as it wears the disguise of the SL65 AMG, but looking more closely the aggressive styling takes on a life of its own. A bit more intimidating to look at with rear fenders that resemble those of the 1997 Mercedes CLK-GTR race car, larger front air scoops and side vents make it unique.
Your Bergen County, NJ used GL dealer is especially impressed with the retractable spoiler which can be extended to aid in driving control when the car is driven above 75 mph. The Black Series is about a half inch lower than the regular SL65 AMG and is wider in the rear and front by about 3.5 inches.
Even though the profile doesn’t seem to differ much from the standard SL, all the body panels of the Black Series have been modified and by using carbon-fiber, Mercedes has take about 550 pounds off the car. Most of the upper body uses the carbon composite and the doors are of magnesium and aluminum. Rear fenders keep their steel construction for safety.
Once you get inside you will notice a better outward view due to a flatter roofline which creates larger windows. Napa leather and Alcantara deck out the interior along with carbon fiber trim and, true to the name, it’s All Black. This is a true “race” car with luxury amenities being reserved for the audio system and climate control. Bergen County, NJ used GL customers will find a soft, close fit with the carbon fiber AMG sport bucket seats and side airbags are included as well.
What you won’t find is anything nonsensical or whimsical. This can is meant to drive. With a 6.0-liter turbocharged engine, engineers have modified the exhaust system to reduce the back pressure. A five-speed automatic with the M2 manual shift makes for a fun start. The steering response is sharp but stable and this car delivers when pushed to its limits.
Rockland County, NY ML buyers will have to agree that the Black Series is a jewel in the Mercedes-Benz crown. With the capability to reach 62 mph in just 3.8 second and 124 mph in 11 seconds you would be hard-pressed to find a more thrilling ride this side of NASA. Of course, the top speed is electronically limited at 199 mph, but that would probably be exciting enough for most of us.
